Sooji Gothambu / Broken Wheat / Dalia Upma

INGREDIENTS

  • Broken Wheat >  1 cup
  • Water >  2 cups
  • Carrot >  4 tbp grated
  • Cabbage > ½ cup chopped (Optional)
  • Peas > ½ cup chopped (Optional)
  • French Beans  >  ½ cup (Optional)
  • Green Chilly >  5-6
  • Onion >  2
  • Ginger >  1 tbp
  • Peanuts >  15-20
  • Chana dal >  1 ½ tbp
  • Grated Coconut >  ¼ cup
  • Cumin Seed / Jeerakam  >  ½ tsp
  • Mustard Seed / Kaduki  >  ½ tsp
  • Green chilly >  3
  • Curry leaf  >  2 stem
  • Oil  >  2 tbp
  • Salt to taste

METHOD

  • Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seed & cumin seed, when they pop add peanut & chana dal and heat for 1 minute. Then add ginger, green chilly & onion sauté till the onion become transparent.
  • Now add the vegetables and curry leaf, sauté for 3-4 minutes. Now add water and bring it to boil, add salt and washed broken wheat slowly. Stir as you do this. Add more water if there isn’t enough water to cover it completely.
  • Cover it and cook, stir frequently and cook until all the water is absorbed.
  • Take some wheat and check whether it is cooked, if not add more water and cook.
  • Once it is cooked switch off the flame. Add grated coconut.
  • (Wash the wheat and soak it in water for 3-4 hrs so that cooking will be easy)
  • Upma is now ready to be served.  It is served well when hot and with 1 tbp sugar.
